By: Windy Karigianes Jazz International Jazz Day began in 2011 to highlight jazz and bring the jazz community together world-wide. President Obama will host the Washington DC celebration from the White House this year. Windy Karigianes will host International Jazz Day here in Las Vegas for the first time. It makes sense, as the long time resident and jazz aficionado - and the International Jazz Day celebration - are a natural match. Born and raised amidst the glitter and glamour of Las Vegas' broad musical scene of smoked filled nightclubs, casino showrooms and popular venues, Windy has managed to develop her own style and brand of an eclectic musical sound. With a multitude of early influences, like that of Linda Ronstadt, Heart, Nancy Wilson, Barbra Streisand, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, perhaps the most significant influence was that of her Father. Under his direction, this lead Windy to making her professional debut at a very young age, on the world renowned Las Vegas Strip. Influenced by her cultural diversity of Italian, Greek and Portuguese, eloquently blended with contemporary harmonies as well as vintage rhythms, this has transcended to what is now considered a remarkable repertoire of eclectic jazz and pop sounds, packaged with an incomparable purity of voice. Having also performed at numerous venues in various regions of the United States and Europe, this has landed itself to collaborating with a large cast of highly recognized musical talent; Randy Hall, former Producer and collaborator with Miles Davis; Vernell Brown Jr. along with Mike Clark and Paul Jackson with Herbie Hancock's Headhunters. Joey Melotti, former Musical Director with Barry Manilow and Michael Bolton and Saxophonist Brandon Fields who is currently co-writing songs on he upcoming Cd. After an extended venture to the Los Angeles music scene, Windy currently resides back where it all began for her; Las Vegas. You can find her performing at any number of venues on and off the strip "The Composer's Showcase", at the Smith Center As a result of astounding success of her previous CD, "Butterfly", she is now back in the studio collaborating with some of her former musical colleagues on a new and fresh project as well as producing several music videos based on such material. Windy is available for interview through April to talk about International Jazz Day, the Las Vegas jazz scene and her new CD. ABOUT INTERNATIONAL JAZZ DAY In November 2011, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially designated April 30 as International Jazz Day in order to highlight jazz and its diplomatic role of uniting people in all corners of the globe. International Jazz Day is chaired and led by Irina Bokova, UNESCO Director General, and legendary jazz pianist and composer Herbie Hancock, who serves as a UNESCO Ambassador for Intercultural Dialogue and Chairman of the Thelonius Monk Institue of Jazz. The Institute is the lead nonprofit organization charged with planning, promoting and producing this annual celebration. International Jazz Day brings together communities, schools, artists, historians, academics, and jazz enthusiasts all over the world to celebrate and learn about jazz and its roots, future and impact; raise awareness of the need for intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding; International Jazz Day is the culmination of Jazz Appreciation Month, which draws public attention to jazz and its extraordinary heritage throughout April. In December 2012, the United Nations General Assembly formally welcomed the decision by the UNESCO General Conference to proclaim April 30 as International Jazz Day. The United Nations and UNESCO now both recognize International Jazz Day on their official calendars. End
