Ms. Russo thanked friends and colleagues in her acceptance speech. Of her positive approach to life, Ms. Russo said, "I always believed that I could do whatever I wanted do, be whatever I wanted to be because my mother believed I could and my family believed I could. I never considered not being able to accomplish my goals." The YWCA of Bethlehem created the Women & Teens of the Year Awards in 1975 to recognize and empower women and their positive achievements in the community. In 1995, the group established the Golden Laurel award to specifically reward the volunteer and philanthropic activities of community members. Past Golden Laurel award recipients include Joanna Barnett, Marlene "Linny" Fowler, Priscilla Payne Hurd, and Susan Yee. Ms. Russo was recognized for her support of women of all ages, philanthropic efforts, and steadfast involvement in the community, including as a board member for United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley, Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce Non-Profit and Business Partners Council, Wildlands Conservancy, The Auxiliary of St. Luke's Hospital, and Donate.Local.Simple, as well as a committee member for Lehigh Valley Food and Wine Festival benefiting Northampton Community College, Northampton County Medical Society Alliance, and Equi-librium Derby Day. Awards were also given to Marta Boulas Gabriel, Outstanding Public Servant; Laura Azzalina, Carrie Ward, and Gladys Wiles, Women of The Year; Meghan Eller, Sabrina Lin, and Leticia Patino-Flores, Teens of the Year.
