TORONTO - April 5, 2016 - PRLog -- When Shakira sang about your hips not lying, it must have been for desk jockeys worldwide who suffer from hip and lower back pain due to being bound to their office chairs for most of the day.  A staggering 80% of the population experience back pain, with 30% actively seeking treatment; factor in that most work days are now an average of 10 hours long, and it won't just be the pounds you'll be packing on, but also diabetes, heart disease and in extreme situations, deep vein thrombosis-with negative medical outcomes including stroke. The time to move is now! And we're not talking about the office cafeteria for birthday cake celebrations.

Patrick Harrison is a foremost expert on active sitting solutions (otherwise known as the antidote to the increasingly detrimental 'sitting disease') and he's a true believer in putting his 'Just Move' mantra to everyday use-even while you work. The inventor of the innovative seating solution CoreChair, which pivots and encourages you to wiggle while you work, is a strong advocate of NEAT: basic daily activity (or non-exercise activity thermogenesis, as defined by Mayo Clinic research), which is key to improved health. NEAT relates to your activity level beyond what you may do at the gym - in other words, the level of incidental movement you incorporate into your day to day life.  "What we need to resolve to do is build more movement into every day. Change positions while we work, walk while we talk on our cell phones, park further away from the office door, take a walk at lunch, use the stairs instead of the elevator. We need to be mindful about this, so that we can reduce one of the biggest health epidemics of our generation."

Some of Patrick's tips for the office include:

Walking meetings: if you and a co-worker are discussing an idea or project, talk about it while walking down the hall or take a quick stroll outside-fresh ideas are sparked with fresh air.

Rock and Roll: during a break, do some stretches and rolls for your back, legs, hip and neck. And if you have the CoreChair or another active sitting chair, do some one minute exercises to get your circulation moving (here are some simple moves (https://www.corechair.com/corefit/) you can do for 60 seconds, every hour)
Take the long road: seems simple enough but taking the stairs, parking at the end of your lot, walking to lunch or incorporating a walk into your lunch will add steps to your pedometer and increase circulation.
Stand & Stretch: sitting all day actually eats away at your muscles, so be sure to set your alarm every half hour as a reminder to stretch for 5 minutes. This will lower muscle tension, get the blood flowing and increase oxygen to the brain
You are what you eat: eating high fat and sugary foods only increases your likelihood of being sluggish all day, so pack some healthy snacks to munch on through-out the day to help boost your energy levels.
Be NEAT: look for ways to add non-exercise activity throughout your day, every day.
