KENT, Ohio - April 6, 2016 - PRLog -- Nadia Greenhalgh-Stanley, Ph.D., College of Business Administration associate professor of economics, has been awarded the 2016 Distinguished Scholar Award by Kent State University's College of Business Administration.

"It is great to be a faculty member of a college that values and rewards research," said Greenhalgh-Stanley. "My hope is that my research will provide insight into how female entrepreneurship was affected before, during and after the Great Recession."

Greenhalgh-Stanley graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Wittenberg University and a Master of Arts and Doctorate in economics from Syracuse University. She joined Kent State's College of Business Administration faculty in 2009 and teaches urban economics, economics of healthcare and principles of microeconomics for the Economics Department.

Greenhalgh-Stanley's research interests include urban economics, public policy and elderly housing and health. More specifically, she focuses on the effects of changes in social insurance programs on elderly housing decisions, long-term care decisions and health outcomes. Her recent work focuses on the effect of living in a low-access food area on elderly food distress and health outcomes, as well as investigating the low-take up rates of the elderly for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

"Professor Greenhalgh-Stanley's proposed research touches on several very important topics related to business growth, including the effects of recessions and changes in wealth and the role of gender in these effects," said Economics Department Chair Donald Williams, Ph.D. "The results of her research will be of interest to policy makers at the national and international levels."

The Distinguished Scholar Award is one of the most prestigious awards at the College of Business Administration, created to provide funding to support excellence in research. Interested full-time faculty members submit proposals to the Dean's and must demonstrate a recent record of quality research published in the top journals within their discipline.

The College Advisory Council (CAC), made up of faculty from each College of Business Administration department, as well as a representative from a regional campus, Dean Deborah F. Spake and Associate Dean for Administration Cathy DuBois, then evaluates each submission and narrows it down to three finalists. The two finalists this year besides Greenhalgh-Stanley were Christopher Groening, Ph.D., assistant professor in marketing and entrepreneurship and Ilgaz Arikan, Ph.D., assistant professor in Management and Information Systems.

"It is a top priority in the Dean's Office to strengthen the culture of excellence in research," said Cathy DuBois, associate dean for administration at the College of Business Administration. "It is extremely important to us to both recognize and reward high quality research."

The three finalists presented their research to College of Business Administration faculty and Ph.D. students. The faculty members scored each presentation and the winning proposal was determined through an average of the presentation scores and written scores by the CAC.

Greenhalgh-Stanley received a $15,000 award, while the two runner-up finalists both received an award of $5,000.
