DETROIT - April 4, 2016 - PRLog -- Detroit Area Honda Dealers are excited to share that the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback has made its prototype debut in New York, meaning it's just a matter of time before this sporty small car makes its way to the Detroit Metro area to join the 2016 Honda Civic Sedan and Civic Coupe. This will be the first time in years the Civic has been available as a hatchback in the North American auto market.

While this is a new body type for the Civic in North America, the Civic Hatchback has been popular in Europe for years, and the new model brings some of that European styling to the table. Perhaps the biggest announcement about the new car's debut is that of the transmission. Attentive drivers and Civic fans already know the hatchback will have the new 1.5L 4-cylinder turbocharged engine, but on the Civic Hatchback it will start off paired with a 6-speed manual transmission for improved control.

Honda has described this car as the "sportiest and most expansive" model in the Civic's 44-year legacy.

Jeff Conrad, Honda's senior vice president and general manager, said, "The Civic Hatchback wraps the 10th generation Civic platform and five-door hatchback utility in emotional, Euro-inspired styling. Offered with the first application of the 1.5L turbo engine paired with a manual transmission, this sportiest Civic to date will attract a whole new set of enthusiasts and buyers to the model and Honda brand."

Honda is keeping tight-lipped on any differences between the prototype that was put on display and the eventual street model of the Civic Hatchback, but critics were told that drivers can expect:

* Larger, wider wheels and tires
* A short front overhang with larger air intakes for a more aggressive look
* LED lights on the front and rear
* Creases and vents on the rear to give the Civic a uniform sense of style
