MINNEAPOLIS - March 25, 2016 - PRLog -- Brothers Fire & Security, a fire suppression and security company serving the Twin Cities area, installs fire sprinkler systems in residential and commercial buildings. They want to discuss the importance of adding fire sprinklers to residential homes.

Fire sprinklers are commonly thought to only be for commercial spaces; however, the National Fire Protection Association is advocating more use of these systems in residential homes. Having a fire sprinkler system can reduce the amount of damage from a fire and save lives by suppressing the fire enough for people to get out of their home safely.

Many homeowners are still unsure about having fire sprinklers installed in their house, so Brothers Fire & Security would like to explain some common misconceptions about fire sprinkler systems.

First, it is often believed that the water damage from fire sprinklers causes more damage than the fire itself. In reality, a house fire can be put out in a matter of minutes with a working fire sprinkler system. However, if a fire is left uncontained for the time it takes firefighters to arrive, the damage from fire and smoke is usually much more extensive than the water damage from sprinklers. Most items can be dried out, but when something has been burned by a fire, it usually cannot be fixed and the damage from smoke can be extensive.

Secondly, many homeowners feel they don't need fire sprinklers since they have working smoke alarms. Smoke alarms are great for alerting residents that there is a fire, but the fire will continue to spread. Smoke alarms do nothing to put out the fire. That's why fire sprinkler systems are so important. The sprinklers will keep homeowners, their family and belongings safe in the event of a fire.

A third misconception about fire sprinklers is that every sprinkler head goes off at once when a fire starts. In actuality, each sprinkler head is individually activated by heat. Therefore, if someone in the home accidentally burns a piece of toast in the kitchen, the sprinklers will not go off. Only when the level of heat in the room reaches a certain temperature, will the sprinklers be activated. Since each sprinkler is activated individually, homeowners do not need to worry about water damage in parts of the home that are not affected by the fire.

Ninety percent of all fires are contained by one or two sprinkler heads. Fire sprinkler systems are a tremendous asset for any home. Sprinklers can help suppress a fire allowing time for residents to get out safely and minimizing the amount of damage to the home.

Brothers Fire & Security, a fire alarm system and security monitoring company, has been in business for more than 20 years.
