VENTURA, Calif. - March 25, 2016 - PRLog -- The Ventura County Public Works Agency's (VCPWA) Transportation Department is proud to announce the completion of the long-awaited Donlon Road Realignment Project.

Relieving congestion at this regional bottleneck has been a goal of residents and the County of Ventura for more than 20 years. Idling vehicles at the intersection had long been a source of air pollution. Further, during peak traffic hours, congestion at the intersection was delayed and often backed up for a mile or more. Since the project has been completed, traffic flow has significantly improved.  Many phone calls, e-mails and comments have been received thanking VCPWA Transportation Department for completing this project.  "Nice job on the 118/34 intersection. Looks good and works well. Makes me want to drive thru it for enjoyment. Well done," emailed Craig Underwood.

"We're excited to finally be able to meet the needs of the Somis community and frequent travelers on this stretch of Highway 118 with these vital road improvements," explains VCPWA Transportation Director David Fleisch. "Regular travelers of this roadway have stated their commute time has been dramatically improved, thus reducing vehicle emissions. "

Supervisor Linda Parks, who represents the Somis community, said she is delighted in the outcome, stating, "The project is really a win-win. Commuters no longer have to waste time sitting in traffic, and Somis residents, who fought a more urban interchange there, prevailed in getting a project that relieves congestion and preserves the character of their community."

The project, which broke ground in June 2015, moved Donlon Road more than 200 feet to the west to connect its alignment with the existing traffic signal on Highway 118 at Somis Road (Highway 34), removing the conflicting eastbound left turn onto the old Donlon Road. The signal is now a standard four-way intersection, with Donlon Road extending to the north; the old intersection at Donlon Road is now closed.

On Monday, March 28, Supervisor Linda Parks will join the VCPWA Department of Transportation and other dignitaries to celebrate the completed project with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
