MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - March 23, 2016 - PRLog -- The U.S. Pain Foundation applauds the release of the National Pain Strategy (NPS) which was put together by  by 80 experts from 6 federal agencies and the medical, scientific and patient communities.  The NPS  is a direct result of the 2011 Institute of Medicine report which found that 100 million Americans are living with chronic pain and called for the development of a comprehensive, population health-level strategy  to address the problem. This 84-page document is a national plan to address pain as a complex, chronic disease and is the result of a nearly two year effort. The plan lays out specific objectives in the areas of population research, public awareness, professional education, care and prevention, disparities and reimbursement and service delivery

U.S. Pain's National Director of Policy and Advocacy, Cindy Steinberg, participated in developing the NPS.

"We're so pleased to see the NPS released and glad it has taken a comprehensive look at the issues facing our community," said Paul Gileno, President and Founder of the U.S. Pain Foundation.  "We were thrilled Cindy played a role in developing the strategy, and we look forward to helping to implement its recommendations."

"I'm so pleased that this work has resulted in a way forward for the pain community," said Steinberg.  "Those of us living with pain should see this as huge step forward in making our voices heard.  U.S. Pain Foundation plans to take an active role in ensuring the NPS is implemented with the help of our members. We will be asking our over 70,000 members to educate their representatives in Congress on the National Pain Strategy and how critical and urgent the need is to accomplish its goal of transforming pain care in the U.S." said Steinberg.
