Prestigious Horatio Alger Scholarship Awarded to Aurora Central High School Student

Andy Guerrero, a Boys Hope Girls Hope of Colorado scholar, is first student from Aurora Central High School to receive prestigious national scholarship.
 
AURORA, Colo. - March 22, 2016 - PRLog -- Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, Inc (https://scholars.horatioalger.org/)., a nonprofit educational organization honoring the achievements of outstanding individuals and encouraging youth to pursue their dreams through higher education, recently announced that Andy Guerrero, a student at Aurora Central High School, is one of 556 recipients nationwide of the prestigious 2016 Horatio Alger State and Specialized Scholarships.

Guerrero, a senior at Aurora Central High School, and a Boys Hope Girls Hope of Colorado (http://www.boyshopegirlshope.org/colorado/Home.aspx) scholar, is an exemplary fit for the scholarship which honors students who "display integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity to pursue academic goals." Guerrero epitomizes the characteristics of the scholarship with an incredible work ethic.  In addition to a full academic schedule, he also works 35 hours per week at a professional sports arena to support himself and his family.  As a Boys Hope Girls Hope of Colorado scholar, Guerrero is part of the Academy Program, which helps disadvantaged  kids in their academic pursuits, and ultimately supports them during high school, the college application process, and through their college careers.

"Andy is an upstanding young man and an incredibly hard worker," stated BHGH Colorado Program Director Laura Conti. "He's a plugger-very determined, and is so deserving of this scholarship. I have to give special credit to Amy Kennedy, one of Andy's mentors, who worked intensively with Andy on the scholarship application process and his college admissions process. She provided immense support in helping Andy navigate an extensive series of applications to earn this scholarship."

Boys Hope Girls Hope of Colorado (BHGH Colorado) was established in 1993 and has provided more than 166 scholarships to young men and women of potential. BHGH Colorado offers The Academy Program, a collegiate preparation program in partnership with Aurora Central High School.  Through this program, students like Guerrero have access to the college preparation, tutoring, and mentoring services provided by BHGH Colorado year round. Guerrero also receives collegiate preparatory guidanceto secure admission to college, and assistance with scholarship applications, such as the Horatio Alger Scholarship, and help with entrance exams, interviews, and resume building.

The Horatio Alger Scholarship is awarded to students who show commitment to continuing their education and serving their communities, despite facing significant adversity. Since 1984, Horatio Alger Association has administered one of the nation's largest privately funded, need-based scholarship programs, having awarded more than $125 million in undergraduate, graduate and specialized scholarships to students from across the United States, including all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Canada. In 2000, 16 years after the establishment of its National Scholarship Program, Horatio Alger Members began funding scholarships concentrated in each state to further its mission of assisting deserving young people to pursue higher education.

Guerrero will utilize his Horatio Alger Scholarship towards his tuition at the University of Colorado where he has been accepted as a member of the class of 2020.  He plans to study education and science with the goal of someday becoming a science teacher.
