LONDON - March 21, 2016 - PRLog -- In the UK, water distribution company Southern Water has said that its advanced metering infrastructure project in south and south-east England is saving 27 million litres of treated water a day. Local media reports that 62% of Southern Water's smart meter points - installed since 2010 - are recording a £162 decrease in bills per year. In Southampton alone, consumers with smart meters are saving 5.3 million litres a day. Almost 450,000 smart water meters have been installed in homes across Kent, Sussex, Hampshire, and the Isle of Wight, helping Southern Water customers reduce their consumption by 16.5%, against a national average of 10%. The results will likely increase pressure on the UK government to support the wider roll-out of smart water meters as more utilities invest in smart water network technology. In September 2015, Itron engaged in a contract with water utility Yorkshire Water in a bid to improve the utility's water management and meter billing system to its customers.

Against this backdrop, SMi is proud to announce that both Southern Water and Yorkshire Water will be sharing case studies at the 5th annual conference on Smart Water Systems, taking place on 25-26 April 2016 in London, UK:

Penny Hodge, Head of Policy and Stakeholder Engagement at Southern Water, will be leading a presentation on Day Two at 09:50 titled 'Universal Metering Programme - more than just the meters'. Her case study will cover the following key points:
• How Southern Water delivered the first large-scale compulsory metering programme in the UK
• The role that customer and stakeholder engagement played in the programme
• The package of measures that supported the programme and delivered for customers

Katy Walker, Water Network, Leakage and Metering Strategy Manager at Yorkshire Water, will be leading a session titled 'Separating leakage from demand using smart data and data smartly' at 15:50 also on Day Two. Her presentation will cover the following areas:
• The impact of meter penetration on the use of smart data
• Alternative methods for gathering demand and leakage data
• Applying available data in smarter ways to improve representativeness

Smart Water Systems 2016 will provide a timely platform to discover how water companies are benefiting from smart water technology, with the short and long-term gains discussed. The two-day programme will feature an array of case studies which will detail the results and progress made from some of the largest UK and European smart water system roll-outs. Furthermore, special focus will be provided on how we can locate and extract meaningful information from the big data generated and first-hand accounts will be shared on how this information can be used to produce significant environmental, social and economic advantage.

Speaker Panel includes:
• Danny Leamon, Head of Metering, Thames Water
• Penny Hodge, Head of Policy and Stakeholder Engagement, Southern Water
