It was established in the year 1861 and it is the main law and order agency for the National Capital Territory of Delhi (NCT). Till 1947, it was a part of Punjab Police and in the year 1948, Delhi Police was restructured. The first chief of Delhi Police was D W Mehra. Now Delhi Police has 6 ranges, 11 police districts, 54 sub-divisions with 181 Police Stations (161 Territorial, 2 IGI Airport, 5 Railway Stations, 8 Metro Stations and Specialised Crime Units). Alok Kumar Verma is the new police commissioner (C.P) of Delhi.

The Delhi Police is the main law and order agency for the National Capital Territory of Delhi (NCT). It does not have jurisdiction over the adjoining areas of the National Capital Region. The head of the Delhi police (DP) is designated as Police Commissioner of New Delhi.The 'Public Order', and Police in Delhi, the National Capital Territory, is under Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Government of India and not under the Government of Delhi. Delhi Police expected to issue job notification to fill up 4669 Constable (Male/Female) posts soon. The recruitment of the candidates in Delhi Police will be through SSC.

There will be 3611 vacancies for Constable (Male) post and 1058 vacancies for Constable (Female) post.

Candidates with an educational qualification of Senior Secondary (10+2) can apply for the posts. Candidates will be selected on the basis of their performance in the Physical Endurance, Measurement Test and Written Test.
