Follow on Google News | New Nonprofit Inspiring Third Graders to be Video MakersA nonprofit after school program in Downtown Decatur, GA launches Kickstarter campaign to inspire the next generation of Film, Video and Audio professionals.
This Spring, City of Decatur resident and veteran music and video producer Couleen LaGon and his team aim to create a warm and nurturing environment for kids and the community. In operation from 2:30pm to 6:30pm, the Märchen Sagen Academy is an after school program teaching the art and science of video and audio production to third graders. The Academy will also be providing weekend and evening classes on video and audio production, photography, painting and film making regularly, when the after school program is not in session, as well as a free lecture series. The free lecture on video production was specifically designed for third graders (and piloted at Clairemont Elementary in the Fall 2015). It is offered free of charge to all of the elementary schools in the City of Decatur potentially serving around 400 kids per quarter. The Märchen Sagen Academy will be a creative hub for the City of Decatur, hosting community art shows, indie film viewings and events throughout the year. The birth of this endeavor occurs in a one hundred year old home right in the center of it all, The Houston House at 418 Church Street. Highlights from Couleen’s career include a production deal with Ceelo Green, a publishing deal with Sony/ATV music publishing, songs in film and television, and professional videos produced for Fortune 500 companies, small businesses, nonprofits and individuals alike. With a Kickstarter campaign underway, the nonprofit hopes to bring light and inspiration to the children and families of The City of Decatur. With successful funding, the academy will renovate the Houston House, furnish and equip the home beautifully and be opening its doors to the first group of third graders in the Fall of 2016.
