LAS VEGAS - March 8, 2016 - PRLog -- Making his third Shoot Out Round appearance on the 2016 Road to Cheyenne Newt Brasfield of Lane, Oklahoma persevered past 8 rookies, two World Champions and 16 other seasoned bull riders to collect the $12,000 check, custom Fenoglio boots, a hat from American Hat Co., and Hy O Silver buckle along with the win at the Tuff Hedeman Vegas Shootoutt at the South Point Hotel Arena and Equestrian Center.

“I have a little bit of a game plan, but a bull is going to do what he wants to everyday and you have to adjust,” said the calm cool and collected cowboy who wears an LF patch on his shirt. Growing up one mile from the late Lane Frost’s home, Brasfield credits his good neighbors for his bull riding success.

“Clyde and Elsie Frost, my Dad and Ricky Jones got me started on calves and I was lucky to have those guys showing me the basics.”

On a weekend Las Vegas promoters called the extreme sports extravaganza, CBR riders did not disappoint thousands of sporting fans who filled the South Point Arena on Saturday night to see 21 bull riders reach the 8 second whistle including three 90 point plus rides.

ROUND ONE

Thirteen bull riders heard the whistle in round one with three time World Champion bull rider Sage Kimzey scoring first with an 87.5 on JQH’s 25T Wicked Ways. The riders took control with 6 rides in section one including rookie Joseph McConnell’s 89.5 performance on Knapp's 93 Pepper to take the lead.

Neil Holmes and Cody Rostockyj would be the only two to survive section two where the bulls took back the momentum. Defending Vegas CBR champion, Brennon Eldred, put the fans back on their feet with his 90 point round winning ride on Y9 Final Judgement, owned by Barn2Buck, which started a contagion of great bull rides turned in by in house favorite U.S. Army veteran, Juan Alonzo, and Colton Jesse. Brasfield turned in 88 points on Hurst's Party Foul to take fourth in the round.

SEMI FINAL ROUND

Twelve bull riders advanced to the semifinal round, but only six would hear the whistle making it a tie between the riders and the bulls.  Five out of the first six in the round failed to make the whistle with rookie Colton Jesse riding Hood Rat thru a change of direction for 87 points and 172.5 on two. 1137 Cowbanger turned in the rankest marked score of the night, 91.5  while bucking off Chris Roundy in 2.32 seconds.

Kimzey jumpstarted the second section of the round with 89.5 points on JQH’s Jack Tar which gave him the lead with 177 on two bulls. Juan Alonzo, feeling the crowd’s support took Bred2Buck’s Danger Zone for an 87.5 spin which put him with 175 on two. Brasfield, riding 2079 Cowtown Cartel was 89 points to tie Kimzey.

“It’s a funny story about my second bull,” said Brasfield. “My dad had mentioned something earlier in the week, he told me he had a bull picked out for me that he would like to see me get on because really bucks and I think he will really fit you.”

Brasfield would advance by riding his father’s pick, Cowtown Cartel, in the semifinals.

Neil Holmes turned in an electrifying 89 on Baker and Hurst’s 285 Wreck Em which put him in the lead at 177.5

Eldred would continue his Vegas momentum posting the highest marked ride of the night, 91.5 on 2015 CBR Bucking Bull of the Year, CR Corpus Red, who Eldred and owner JC Knapp both described as just a great bucker with a lot of heart. With 181.5 on two, Eldred would be in the driver’s seat for the final four Shoot Out Round.

SHOOT OUT ROUND

Eldred earned first draft honors and selected Jeff Harris's Ole School, Brasfield would pick Outside the Box and Neil Holmes would try the unridden CPR bull, 158 Sleeping Deacon, leaving the World Champ with Rawson’s Black Betty.

Kimzey making his first appearance on Black Betty would post an 87.5 as the bucker changed directions three times with buck and kick, while powering Kimzey to be the first to ride three. Holmes could not get past the unridden Sleeping Deacon. Brasfield up next on J908 Outside the Box, after feeling he missed an opportunity in Laughlin earlier this season on Jimmy Jaynes storied bucker.

“I passed on him in Laughlin and Rostockyj would go on to win the event on him,” said Brasfield. “I was expecting one thing and he gave me a different trip, kind of went back to the left a little, but I have seen him plenty and my instinct was to pick him.”

Brasfield, riding in his third Shoot Out round quickly became an ally of the veteran final four bull and together they put together a crowd pleasing solid 88.5 flaunting on the bull selected 14 times by Tuff Hedeman for the Shoot Out Round. J908 has an impressive profile of delivering 90 point plus rides. 50 percent of the times he’s attempted, 7 of 14, the score resulted in 90 point plus rides to his opponents.

Eldred was up last and his selection of Ole School would end quickly with a sharp left turn out of the chutes.

Lane Frost and Tuff Hedeman were the answer to what drives your inspiration.

“It’s hard to think of one without the other,” smiled Brasfield.

BULL TEAM CHALLENGE

Thanking God and the blessing of good friends, the alliance of JC Knapp and Flip Em Off Bucking Bulls, collected their $20,000 check, Fenolgio boots, American Hat and Hy O Silver trophy buckle to accompany their second event title win on the 2016 Road to Cheyenne Tour with 285.62 points for the win in Vegas.  Anchored by Corpus Red, Knapp paired him with 93 Pepper, a Mack Altizer bred bull who was ridden by Joseph McConnell for 89.5 points, and rookie bull 128 Uptown Funk.

WORLD STANDINGS RACE

Sage Kimzey remains the No. 1 rider with 1,586 points.  Kimzey extended his lead with his strong second place finish in Vegas. He gained two scores on No. 2 Cody Rostockyj who is now 440 points behind Kimzey. Brennon Eldred leapfrogged 14 points to go ahead of the reigning World Champ, Cody Teel, and Newt Brasfield jumps into the top 5 with 976.5 points, 84 points behind Teel. 900 points remain on the field for bull riders trying to make it to the Finals of the Road to Cheyenne.
