Behind the Scenes: The Inside Scoop On How Billet Badges Inc. Makes an Automobile Badge
By: DG Group, Inc.
Dream Giveaway Garage spoke with Billet Badges designer Steve Smart and asked about the badge (or emblem)-making process. “It starts by a customer coming to us looking for a badge he or she can’t source through NOS and aftermarket sources,” he says. If the customer has an original badge, even if it is pitted or otherwise unusable, Billet Badges will scan and measure the part to create a template and digitally redraws it with pinpoint accuracy. Even if you do not have the original part, they can work to create the design from a photograph of the original. The digital image is transformed into a 3D CAD file, which is then used to produce a surface template that a CNC machine follows to robotically machine the badge out of a solid block of domestic 6061-T6 aluminum.
Billet Badges also creates custom 3D badges, as it did for the 2016 Corvette Dream Giveaway, specifically the 2016 Lingenfelter Signature Edition Serial Number 001 Corvette Z06. The badge images you see within this press release were manufactured from 2D artwork expertly imagined by Dream Giveaway Garage’s creative team.
Billet Badges also prides itself on its standard size badges. Starting with OEM-sized and shaped blanks, such as a Ford oval or a Dodge shield, Billet Badges produces custom badges replete with each customer’s choice of text, graphics and finish. For these styles of badges, Billet Badges has templates that are on the shelf and ready to go.
“Three different mills are used to create the various badges,” Smart says. One mill produces custom badges, a second mill produces large vent or sphere-style badges, and a third mill produces small rectangular and oval badges. All of the detailing, including badge painting, badge polishing and badge powder coating, is performed in-house. All badges come with a 3M Very High Bond (VHB) adhesive backing for quick and easy installation. Once a badge is completed, it is shipped directly to the customer’s address of choice.
