Follow on Google News | Roque “Rocky” De La Fuente guest of The Church of God in ChristBy: Rocky 2016 LLC Bishop J. Drew Shread and First Lady Karen Clark-Shread (four-time Grammy Award winner) extended the invitation, and De La Fuente welcomed the opportunity to join in the service and speak to the members. De La Fuente spoke about family. He also talked about how he has had to overcome obstacles both in life and in this campaign. He shared a story about the Brown and Black Forum in Iowa. According to De La Fuente, Dr. Willie Wilson and he were both denied the opportunity to participate in the Forum just as they have been denied the opportunity to participate in the Democratic Party’s national debates. The reason the snub by the Brown and Black Forum is particularly interesting is because De La Fuente is “Brown” by virtue of his Hispanic heritage and Dr. Wilson is Black. The fact that only Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders and then-candidate Martin O’Malley were the only candidates permitted to discuss minority issues in the Forum draws attention to the work that needs to be done to expand minority representation in America’s political process. After the service, De La Fuente commented about how wonderful the experience was. “I was blessed to receive the invitation from the Bishop and the First Lady. I enjoyed every aspect of the service from its message to the beautiful music and singing that was a part of it. I will always treasure this day and hope to be invited back again,” said De La Fuente. The Church of God in Christ is a predominantly African-American Pentecostal Holiness Christian denomination with reportedly over 5 million members in the United States. It was founded in 1897 by Charles Harrison Mason and incorporated in 1927 in Memphis, Tennessee. Its 15,000 congregations across the country are organized as dioceses called jurisdictions under the authority of a Bishop.
