Stop yawning because today is the day to DREAM BIG and take back your sleep! The purpose of this document is to invite Media to be aware that March 18th is the World Sleep Day 2016. This document briefly describes the World Sleep Day 2016 and the Canadian Sleep Society (CSS) and provides Canadian Media contacts for World Sleep Day 2016. The Canadian Sleep Society is proud to endorse and take part in this year World Sleep Day activities. Slogan: GOOD SLEEP IS A REACHABLE DREAM • Good sleep is one of the 3 pillars of good health along with a balanced diet and regular exercise. • There are close to 100 disorders of sleep but most are modifiable and manageable with the help of sleep specialists. • Having good sleep night after night is a dream for many people but may be achievable with proper help. WORLD SLEEP DAY IS AN ANNUAL EVENT The first WSD was held on March 14th 2008, under the slogan “Sleep Well, Live Fully Awake” and has continued to grow steadily since. World Sleep Day is held on the Friday before Spring Vernal Equinox. World Sleep Day is an annual event that calls to action important issues related to sleep using collaborative efforts energized by sleep professionals all over the world. WSD events take place primarily online at www.worldsleepday.org. Delegates from around the world spread sleep issue awareness locally by hosting special events including public lectures and workshops, appear on local television and radio shows, create and distribute booklets, pamphlets, promotional videos, and press releases on sleepThe World Sleep Society has issued the following declaration related to World Sleep Day: WORLD SLEEP DAY DECLARATION: • Whereas, sleepiness and sleeplessness constitute a global epidemic that threatens health and quality of life, oh • Whereas, much can be done to prevent and treat sleepiness and sleeplessness, • Whereas, professional and public awareness are the firsts steps to action, • We hereby DECLARE that the disorders of sleep are preventable and treatable medical conditions in every country of the world.
