SAN JOSE, Calif. - March 3, 2016 - PRLog -- Friends, neighbors, and loved ones of people who have been evicted and displaced in Silicon Valley will hold a vigil at the Mayor’s State of the City gathering on Saturday, March 5. The purpose will be to remind our city officials of the hardships faced by hundreds of thousands of San Jose residents caught in the throes of our desperate affordable housing crisis. People battle daily to pay impossibly high rents, and live in continual anxiety and fear of an eviction that will force their whole families into homelessness or relocation out of the area.

This will not be a protest but a call on the Mayor and City Council to join us in supporting measures to control local rents and enact just cause protections against unfair and unreasonable evictions. Our purpose is to include our concerns in the State of the City celebration, not to interfere with it in any way.

We will gather peacefully at 9 am at Overfelt High School and be present at 9:30 while people enter the gymnasium for the State of the City event. We will participate in the event itself at 10:00 am, and then table during the Resource Fair at 11:30 in the Multi-Purpose Room.

Please register in advance for the event at: http://events.r20.constantcontact.com/register/event?llr=ffcsvncab&oeidk=a07ec0pqphpdda7b029

You must bring a copy of your registration confirmation to gain attendance inside.

The lesson of all our sacred texts is that the greatness of our city will not be measured by its technology, by the beauty of its buildings, or the size of its bank accounts. Eternity will judge us by how we treat the least of our people in their hour of need. This is our city’s moment of truth.
