Turning Teen Profiled on NBC WDIV Channel 4 Action News

WDIV News reporter Paula Tutman shares how Turning Teen programs help mothers and daughters navigate through puberty.

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. - March 3, 2016 - PRLog -- NBC WDIV: Click on Detroit’s Karen Drew reports, “Now there is a new hope...it’s a class that teaches moms and daughters how to navigate through puberty.”

To get parents and kids talking about puberty, two pediatricians created Turning Teen to offer workshops for mothers and daughters about the awkward topic of puberty. Metro-Detroit based doctors Lisa Klein and Carrie Leff give mothers a way to start the conversation about puberty with their daughters in a casual and creative environment.

“ When talking about girls growing up there is absolutely no textbook, but this is probably the closest thing,” says WDIV news reporter Paula Tutman.

Since their launch in October 2015 they have had over a dozen workshops, helping over 150 girls understand how their bodies work and what changes they can expect in their tween years.  The response has been incredible from both moms AND girls. One mom said, “My daughter had mixed emotions going to a puberty class, but by the end was completely engaged.”  Mothers leave the two-hour workshop relieved that “the talk” has finally been started, and are pleasantly surprised that conversations naturally continued to happen after the workshop ended.

Kids do not have a lot of opportunity to learn accurate information about their bodies.  Dr. Klein warns that “kids are often gathering misinformation from unreliable sources, such as the internet and their friends. “  Dr. Leff adds, “Schools only spend a few hours a year talking about puberty and sex.” This prompted these doctor moms to create a series of three Turning Teen workshops for girls ages 8-14, covering the topics of male and female anatomy, the physical and emotional changes related to puberty, how to care for a girl’s changing body, and reproduction.

One mother summed it up best. “Turning Teen is a gift to moms and daughters! It's a comfortable way to discuss an often uncomfortable topic.”

Paula Tutman reports, “They (Turning Teen) jokingly calls it surviving puberty for the second time. Though if you have a pre-pubescent girl in your life, you know what she’s going through, and what she’s putting you through, is no laughing matter.”
