ABILENE, Texas - March 2, 2016 - PRLog -- Camp Able of Buffalo Gap (“Camp Able”), a new equine-assisted therapy and horse rescue nonprofit organization, announced today that it has used a $14,500 grant from the Community Foundation of Abilene to help expand its equine-assisted therapy programs for kids and veterans with disabilities. The grant was part of the Community Foundation of Abilene’s Fall Discretionary Grant Cycle.

The funding from Community Foundation of Abilene was specifically used to purchase a utility vehicle that will help Camp Able optimize its capabilities and improve productivity. Such productivity improvements will help Camp Able dedicate more time and effort to its growing therapeutic riding programs for disabled individuals in the Big Country. The utility vehicle will also help Camp Able care for its 22 horses, many of which are animals rescued from difficult circumstances. Several of the horses Camp Able has rescued have been trained for use in therapeutic riding activities.

“We are grateful to the Community Foundation of Abilene for its generous grant,” said Renee Hicks, founder and board member of Camp Able of Buffalo Gap. “With financial assistance and community support from caring individuals and organizations like the Community Foundation of Abilene, we are making great strides toward our mission to cultivate healthy, independent living for people with special needs through skills-based training and equine therapy, with a special focus on using horses that have been rescued from difficult circumstances. We encourage new riders, volunteers and sponsors to join us in our efforts to make a difference in Abilene and the surrounding communities.”

Camp Able provides therapeutic riding and skills-based training to individuals with special needs in the Big Country area, including Dyess Air Force base. Camp Able offers both daily programs and summer residential camps. Camp Able has successfully helped individuals of all ages diagnosed with a number of conditions, including autism, developmental disabilities, stroke, post-traumatic stress and emotional disabilities. Camp Able currently partners with three Life Skills classes in the Jim Ned and Merkel school districts to provide equine-assisted therapy to students with special needs. In the future, Camp Able hopes other school districts in the Abilene area will participate in these programs to ensure that all school levels have access to such therapeutic services, from elementary school to senior high school.
