CDC Reports Impending Flu Season: How To Prepare

AURORA, Colo. - March 1, 2016 - PRLog -- Although we’ve been experiencing a mild flu season in the United States, the data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show a dramatic seven-fold increase in the percentage of Influenza B cases, which is especially severe in young adults.

Influenza B can cause debilitating cramps and it is important to prevent the virus from spreading within a household. There is never a good time to be derailed by illness. Preparation and quick reaction to symptoms can make the difference for families, protecting from further spread of the virus.

The best way to be well equipped against the cold and flu viruses is by dedicating a room in the house as the SAFEROOM, and stocking it ahead of time with necessary supplies.

There are several items that belong in a flu preparedness kit. The most essential of these are: disposable latex gloves, a sealed facemask, a thermometer, plenty of fluids (water, Gatorade, Pedialyte, etc.), and FluNada, a laboratory-tested nasal spray that relieves symptoms in just five minutes. It is also critical to include hand sanitizer, sanitizing surface wipes, a cough suppressant (syrup or drops), white sheets, and some periodic ventilation in the SAFEROOM.

The SAFEROOM is a room dedicated to isolating the infected person to avoid contact with other household members. Only one caretaker should be appointed to go in and out of the SAFEROOM, and all surfaces should be wiped down upon every exit.

Cold and flu viruses can be contracted through virus-infected particles in the air and by contact with infected surfaces. To avoid contracting the virus it’s important to stay at least six feet away from the infected person at all times. Combining this with the aforementioned supplies will ensure the lowest risk of virus transmission.

A SAFEROOM functions most properly by being set up well ahead of time. It’s important for everyone in the household to have a discussion about SAFEROOM rules and to appoint a primary caretaker.
