Sarah Harper “Sallie” Heard (Middleton), Ellamae Ellis League (Macon), and Katie Hall Underwood (Sapelo Island) will each be honored posthumously and inducted into the Georgia Women of Achievement Hall of Fame during the annual ceremony. These women will join 83 others who have been previously honored by the organization. Georgia Women of Achievement honors women in Georgia’s history who have made outstanding contributions to the State of Georgia and who serve as an inspiration to present day Georgians. Every March, during Women’s History Month, up to three qualified women are recognized for their individual achievements. GWA executive director, Betty Hollan, says, “Georgia Women of Achievement has a long standing history of honoring the many courageous women of our state. We have all benefitted from the contributions of women like Sallie Heard, Ellamae League and Katie Underwood and are thrilled to be celebrating them in conjunction with Women’s History Month.” Seventeen year old award-winning author, Maya Van Wagenen of Statesboro, Georgia will serve as this year’s keynote speaker. Maya’s first full-length non-fiction book, Popular: Vintage Wisdom for a Modern Geek debuted on the New York Times Bestseller List and she has been recognized on TIME Magazine‘s “The Sixteen Most Influential Teens of 2013” and Huffington Post‘s “The Thirteen Most Fearless Teens of 2013.” DreamWorks purchased the film rights for Popular, making Maya the youngest non-actor to sign a deal with the studio. Maya is currently finishing her senior year at Statesboro High School while penning her next manuscript for Penguin Books.
