Monitor Pest Control Helps Facility Managers Tackle Urban Birds

NORTHFLEET, U.K. - Feb. 24, 2016 - PRLog -- When considering the cleaning and hygiene requirements of business premises, one aspect that is often overlooked is the damage caused by birds.  This is particularly true in the case of urban and built-up areas, where the presence of large numbers of pigeons and gulls presents a risk to public health and safety, results in damage to buildings, and significantly increases cleaning and maintenance costs.

Gary Howard, Managing Director of Kent-based Monitor Bird Control, explains why urban birds require management: “From a public health and safety perspective, birds and their nests, feathers and droppings are known to be reservoirs for a wide range of diseases and parasites which are potentially fatal to humans.  This risk of disease transmission, when combined with the serious slip hazard that is presented by bird faeces on pavements and walkways, provides a compelling reason to put some kind of bird management plan in place”.

It is not just health and safety concerns that warrant action.  Image is often one of the most important issues facing Facilities and Building Managers, and the constant fouling by perching birds not only spoils the aesthetic outlook of a property, but can smell extremely unpleasant, deterring people from using businesses and amenity areas in the vicinity of nesting sites.

While mess can be cleaned (at a cost), the damage caused by acidic bird droppings cannot be so easily reversed.  The accumulation of faeces and feeding debris is a common cause of blocked gutters, resulting in water damage, and the acidic nature of guano can spoil masonry and metalwork.

The traditional response to the issue of urban bird management has been netting and spiking – techniques which, whilst very effective, are often inappropriate for historic buildings or new, statement premises.  To meet this need, an innovative bird control product, Avishock, has been launched to great acclaim.   Essentially, Avishock works by sending a pulse of electricity down a thin (8mm) track which is placed along popular perching sites.  When the birds try to land, they are given a very small shock – enough to be uncomfortable and deter them from loafing, roosting or nesting, but not enough to harm.

Howard explains why Avishock represents such a watershed in bird management: “This innovative solution is ideal for complex projects which traditionally would have been very difficult to proof, and from a customer’s perspective, is visually very discreet.  Avishock represents an excellent addition to the bird controller’s arsenal of techniques, and addresses the cause of many of the hygiene and cleaning issues raised by Facilities Managers”.
