Gold's Gym Ormond Beach and C.O.P.E. Host Panel of Speakers for National Eating Disorder Awareness

Celebrate EveryBODY: Be Your Own Beautiful event Saturday, February 27th at 11 am for the National Eating Disorder Awareness Week.

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. - Feb. 22, 2016 - PRLog -- With  idealized bodies displayed on every magazine cover and embedded in the Hollywood images of success,  the realistic, healthy body is not properly portrayed in our society.  Unfortunately, messages of self-love and positive body image are NOT emphasized in the community. Gold's Gym has made a huge impact on its members by highlighting the dangers of dieting; they also conduct monthly workshops that focus on healthy living and self-care.

As part of the NEDA National Eating Disorder Awareness week, C.O.P.E (Community Outreach for the Prevention of Eating Disorders), has partnered with Gold's Gym to host a panel of experts speaking on the topic. The National NEDA Eating Disorder Awareness Week is set for the week of February 21st through February 27th. The local event will take place on Saturday, February 27th at the new Gold's Gym Wellness Studio at 11:00 am and is open to the public. The panel of experts will be speaking on the topic not only for those who may have a history of the spectrum of disordered eating and weight and shape concerns, but also for loved ones who are looking for more resources and support.

Learning to love your body at any shape is a core message of C.O.P.E a local 501©(3) nonprofit established in 2000 by clinical psychologist and renowned speaker Dr. Karen Samuels who states “Too many people are struggling with disordered eating but not nearly enough are getting the help they deserve”.

In the United States, 20 million women and 10 million men suffer from a clinically significant eating disorder at some time in their life. The incidence of eating disorders has doubled since the 1960s and is increasing in younger age groups, as well as at mid-life and beyond.   NEDA (National Eating Disorder Association) has been a national resource for focusing the spotlight on eating disorders with the goal of improving public understanding of their causes, dangers and treatments.
With key takeaways on the treatment of eating disorders as well as stories from survivors, the event shares the message of strength and hope that recovery is possible. New disorders such as binge eating disorder and orthorexia are now being termed as additional disordered eating that can negatively impact someone's well-being. Oftentimes, the fine line between trying to achieve that "perfect body" crosses over to deprivation, restrictive under-eating, over exercising, binging and purging, contributing to serious negative health implications for years to follow. Eating disorders can be a silent killer and are known to have a mortality rate 12 times higher than any other mental illness. With eating disorders, early intervention can make a huge difference in successful recovery.

C.O.P.E reaches out across the community every chance they get. Dr. Samuels and members of C.O.P.E., including Dr Kathryn Fraser, the Behavioral Medicine Coordinator at Halifax Health Family Medicine Residency Program, have been delivering workshops on media literacy, positive self-esteem and bolstering strategies for the prevention extreme dieting in middle schools across Volusia and Flagler Counties. They have successfully shared the message with thousands of students to build resiliency in youth and prevent such deadly disorders.

Additional speakers include local Yoga Studio owner, Debbie Yarbrough, who is in recovery herself and spoke at the 2014 NEDA National Conference about adult women suffering from eating disorders. With combined efforts, C.O.P.E. and Gold's Gym hope to eliminate the shame and silence as well as stigma of eating disorders, by providing community awareness, education and resources.   COPE wants our community to recognize "How to help someone you love." and that professional treatment is locally available.   We will discuss how to partner with a healthcare team and find local and national resources. We hope to help others along their path in recovery so we all know that they do not have to fight the battle alone. There is hope, help and healing!
