WILMINGTON, Del. - Feb. 19, 2016 - PRLog -- In spite of the bitter cold February wind, on Thursday, Wilmington City Council President Theo Gregory spread warmth throughout Ingleside Retirement Apartments. Theo is no stranger to Ingleside, or to the 208 seniors who reside in the apartments.

As he walked through the facility, he paused to reminisce with long-time resident Charlene Simmons, who helped him house young student athletes in Houston years before. He hugged his former neighbor Yvonne Hill, who tearfully shared how President Gregory loaned his van so that her disabled husband could attend a family wedding in Virginia. Ingleside resident, Rev. Twin Brown, who teaches videography to young students, enthusiastically greeted President Gregory; and wished him well in his campaign for Mayor.

Ingleside’s home health aide Alma Manlove ran to his side and embraced him, sharing how he had previously helped her understand a legal issue, and referred her to resources that would ultimately resolve the issue. Georgia Sutton, Ingleside’s nurse made time in her busy schedule to personally thank President Gregory for his $750 commitment to Ingleside Homes’ Benevolence Fund.

The Benevolence Fund underscores the core values behind Ingleside Homes mission and work. Each year, Ingleside distributes approximately $130,000 to assist seniors who cannot afford the difference between the cost of services, and the subsidies allowed by the government. Ingleside has never had to evict a resident due to their inability to pay for services. The Benevolence funds provide meals, transportation, gap insurance, shelter and activities to support the elderly so that they can remain independent longer.

“On behalf of our Trustees, residents and staff, I would like to thank President Gregory for his leadership in making a gift to the elderly in Wilmington,” stated Larry Cessna, CEO. “We have fought many battles together over the years on behalf of seniors in Wilmington; and Theo is always on their side. He is one of the few legislators that understand that when the average cost of a one-bedroom apartment in Wilmington is $999/ month, a senior with $771/month in social security income cannot find a place to live. He also is committed to assisting nonprofits find the resources they need for capital improvements.”
