Broward Meals On Wheels Awarded Grant From The Jim Moran Foundation

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Feb. 21, 2016 - PRLog -- Plantation, Fla. – (February 22, 2016) – Broward Meals on Wheels was recently the proud recipient of a $100,000 grant from The Jim Moran Foundation in support of its Emergency Meals Program for seniors. Broward Meals on Wheels is one of the largest of 5,000 Meals on Wheels programs across the country working every day to protect millions of elderly individuals from isolation and hunger – an effort made possible by generous donors and volunteers who help in communities just like Broward County all across America. The number of seniors right here in our county continues to increase, and it will take much work to meet the escalating need.

The Emergency Meals Program enables Broward Meals on Wheels to provide meals to homebound clients for a limited time who suddenly find themselves without food and without any way to get food and who need to be assessed by the Meals on Wheels social work staff to gain access to community based care. Seniors who benefit from this program have recently been or are about to be released from the hospital. Malnourishment caused by a lack of access to proper nutrition leads to poor recovery rates, increased re-hospitalization, and unnecessary early institutionalization. Emergency meals can truly make the difference between aging with dignity in their homes or long-term institutionalization and premature death for the clients Broward Meals on Wheels serves.

“We are overwhelmed with gratitude towards The Jim Moran Foundation for awarding us these much needed funds to provide emergency meals to our homebound seniors,” said Mark Adler, Executive Director of Broward Meals on Wheels. “Through this new partnership, we will be able to provide much-needed, nutritious emergency meals to thousands of seniors.  This is truly a testament to the caring and support that makes our community strong.”

Members of the community can get involved with Broward Meals on Wheels by donating their time, talent or treasure to help further the mission as they continue to serve Broward’s senior population. Individuals or corporations interested in getting involved can learn more at www.bmow.org.
