This Australian doctor spent a good part of his career travelling the Pacific to treat islanders, who otherwise would not have had access to health care. He was head of the Eye Clinic at the Royal Melbourne Hospital for 22 years, and for 20 years led an annual eye team to the Solomon Islands and other islands in the Pacific, where he and his team performed sophisticated eye surgery. He describes the humour, joy, and pathos he found in his work and what it meant to help those in need. Dr. Galbraith said, “I spent three or four weeks in the Solomons every year for almost two decades, providing routine outpatient eye clinics, and performing approximately 130 eye operations each year on the islanders. At the request of the government of Vanuatu, I trained a talented male operating room nurse to perform cataract surgery and simple operations. For about a decade he was the only eye surgeon in Vanuatu and was successful in this role.” He added, “I wrote a textbook Basic Eye Surgery (published by Churchill Livingstone) After retirement, the doctor developed a five-day basic ophthalmology course that has been taught to local doctors and nurses in the Pacific, as well as in Australian rural areas.
