“MIRACLES OF FAITH” CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH HONORING FIRST WOMAN & FIRST BLACK TO RUN FOR PRESIDENT WITH THE SHIRLEY CHISHOLM “DEFENDER OF THE POOR” AWARDS CEREMONY

The Honorable Barbara Lee will be among the first recipients of the award ceremony that will include phenomenal Grammy-nominated virtuoso pianist Ricardo Scales and the prodigious Kev Choice among others.

Before there was President Barack Obama, before there was the Reverend Jesse Jackson, before there was Elizabeth Dole, there was Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm of New York’s 12th Congressional District, who ran for the Presidency of the United States of America.  Miracles of Faith Community Church, Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA) is remembering Chisholm’s groundbreaking achievements with its first “Shirley Chisholm Defender of the Poor Awards Ceremony, Sunday, February 21, 2016 at 3:00 p.m.

The first class of distinguished honorees of the “Shirley Chisholm Defender of the Poor Award are: U.S. Congresswoman, The Honorable Barbara Lee; Carol H. Williams, founder and CEO of the Carol H. Williams Advertising Agency; Reverend Dr. Cheryl Ward, Pastor and Sharon Talley, Walgreen’s Manager.  “As we will be just a week away from “Women’s History Month,” when our commemoration is held, it’s a delight for us to have these East Bay Champions as our first honorees as we celebrate Black History Month and the work of Dr. Chisholm, a remarkable stalwart fighter for the poor, ” said Reverend Greggory L. Brown, Pastor of Miracles of Faith Community Church.

The ceremony will be include entertainment by Miracles of Faith Community Church Musicians: Grammy nominated Ricardo Scales, Kymberly Jackson, Sonny Fairley, J.R. Hall, Tabe Gibson and Larry Gaines.  Guest musicians and Friends of Miracles of Faith are: Kevin Choice, Deanne Brewer, and Bishop Bill Combs & Dorothy “O Happy Day” Morrison.

The free to the public “Shirley Chisholm Defender of the Poor Awards” will give the Bay Area an opportunity to take note of the social justice and social services work of Miracles of Faith Community Church.  Beyond its spiritual benefit to the East Oakland community, Miracles of Faith Community Church has helped residents with medical needs, food and education.

“Miracles of Faith” has been the home to the Head Start Program on Virginia Avenue for more than a decade and has positively impacted the lives of young people and their parents, many of who are single parents.

“Miracles of Faith” has consistently served people in need with its monthly food distribution program. “Miracles of Faith” is known for its community celebrations that have honored community leaders.

The church on Virginia Avenue, has often joined with other community groups to impact change for Oakland; “The Take Back High Street” campaign is an example of the church’s involvement in social justice.
