DAGENHAM, U.K. - Feb. 15, 2016 - PRLog -- Weininger Resistance Sliding, known as ‘WRS’ for short, is a sport and fitness regime that can be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of physical ability.

The sport, governed by the Sport and Recreation Alliance, can be incorporated into point scoring games and tournaments, as well as being used as a training and conditioning programme for people of all ages, from children to adults.

A Simple Idea from the UK’s First Gladiator Champion
WRS is the brainchild of the UK’s first Gladiators champion, Weininger Irwin, who came up with the idea whilst watching his two year old son slide across the floor. It is a simple but incredibly effective activity where participants use their own bodyweight to slide from point A to B. One of the major benefits of WRS is that it allows training and competitive sport to be enjoyed by both able bodied and disabled participants.

WRS works by isolating and stimulating individual muscle groups, which makes it ideal for conditioning and strengthening.

It is also the perfect way for children to get active whilst enjoying themselves.

A Fun Way to Get Active
At Stormont House School in Hackney, the Year 12 students have been experiencing WRS as part of their regular physical education lessons and the school bought their own boards so they can be used with other students later in the term. A school spokesperson said, “Sliding is low impact and requires no jumping, only the use of your core, hamstrings, gluteal muscles and quads to move you forward and back through moves such as seated slides, partner-pulling and sliding squats. The students have found this activity to be very strenuous - they definitely know that they have done a work out when the session is completed.”

WRS was also incorporated into the recent Stepney Partnership Paralympics Day on 21st January 2016, during which children from eight London schools competed in a range of sports. Adaptations were made to enable children of all physical levels of ability to take part.

John Wood, London Youth Games Referee, said, “It’s a great sport for children with disabilities” and Nicola Jones of Suttons Primary School in Havering commented, “I would like to say how motivating the training was. The fact that both children and teachers were involved was particularly useful to me as the P.E. co-ordinator for Suttons Primary School."

Ideal for Training
London Youth Rowing and Fairlop Rowing Club are also using WRS from 23rd February 2016 as part of their training. WRS will be used in conjunction with the indoor rowing machines to help develop the fitness levels of the junior and adult rowers.

Because sliding is just like swimming but without the water, this training will help the rowers really feel the pull of the water, as if they were actually training on it.

How to ‘Get WRS’
Weininger Resistance Sliding is a regular at numerous events throughout London and Essex, including the Redbridge Mini Games, the Great Get Together Armed Forces Day, the Kids Expo at the Liberty Shopping Centre in Romford, the London Youth Games FanFest at Crystal Palace, The Mayor’s Newham Show and Coca Cola Zero Park Lives. It has also been incorporated into the Redbridge Vision Active Stars 10-week programme to assist children above a healthy weight to get enthusiastic about being active, and is a valued part of Ilford's Sir Isaac Newton Academy enrichment programme.
