Follow on Google News | “4 Short Pieces” by Frank Bridge transcribed for Flute or Alto FluteNew publication from Noteworthy Sheet Music: John W. Pratt’s flute transcriptions of “4 Short Pieces”, originally for violin and piano, by Frank Bridge.
Frank Bridge (b. Brighton, 1879; d. Eastbourne, 1941) was an English composer, violinist and violist, and conductor. The 4 Short Pieces were written by Bridge for violin and piano and first published in 1912. They provide a delightful introduction to an accessible post-romantic composer who should be better known. The four short works are titled Meditation, Spring Song, Lullaby, and Country Dance. The pieces can be arranged fairly easily for other instruments, including woodwinds, as the original violin parts have no double stops. Indeed, the transcriptions recently created by John W. Pratt demonstrate that the 4 Short Pieces adapt remarkably well for flute or alto flute. The newly-published edition offered by Noteworthy Sheet Music includes complete parts for both flute and alto flute, so players can decide for themselves on which instrument they choose to perform each piece. The Meditation and Lullaby sound particularly lovely on the alto flute and Country Dance is a splendid romp on the C flute, but all four works are effective on either instrument.
