Is it “We the People” or “We the Party” in Iowa?

DES MOINES, Iowa - Jan. 31, 2016 - PRLog -- Democratic presidential candidate Roque “Rocky” De La Fuente thought he followed all the rules to qualify for the Iowa Caucus. Yet, his name will be absent from the sign-up sheets when Iowans caucus on Monday night unless you count “Other.”

It seems De La Fuente missed one of the rules, but only because the rule did not exist until last week. The De La Fuente campaign became aware of it when a member of its team saw a sample sign-in sheet. Rocky’s name will not appear as expected. Instead, he will be one of more than 140 Democratic candidates who will be lumped together under the heading “Other.”

The Iowa Democratic Party added a rule at the last minute; one that required a candidate to have received at least one percent of support in the national polls to have his or her name appear on the list. This might be reasonable except for the fact that the DNC influences whose name is even mentioned in the polls. For the past several months, those polls have only included candidates with the surnames of Clinton, Sanders and O’Malley.  In December when De La Fuente submitted his credentials for ballot qualification, this was not mentioned.

This rule is particularly unfair when you consider the uniqueness of De La Fuente’s candidacy. While he entered the race late and as an unknown, he put together a team that helped him surge in front of former Governor O’Malley in terms of the number of states in which he qualified, In fact, De La Fuente qualified in the critical swing state of Ohio, while O’Malley did not.

De La Fuente is the first candidate in history to overcome the incredible barriers the party has put in place in many of the states to prevent an outsider like him from qualifying on their ballots or to participate in their caucuses. This real life “Rocky” beat the system in Massachusetts, Michigan, and North Carolina, just to name a few.

“I’m on track to qualify in 46 to 48 of the states and in all the territories as well as Washington, D.C.,” said De La Fuente. Rocky intends to fight to the end just like his movie counterpart.

“The disappointment in Iowa is that they changed the rules at the end of the game,” De La Fuente said. “We moved a significant part of our campaign team here back in December and invested more than $350,000 trying to overcome the party’s media blackout of my candidacy; time and money we could have invested elsewhere had we known we weren’t going to be treated fairly here.”

Still, De La Fuente remains positive. “I love Iowa,” he said. “We’ve met so many amazing people here, I’m glad we came. I’ll just have to put my faith in the good people of Iowa and hope that they’ll caucus for me Monday night and stand up for what’s right. They should get to decide who the candidates are rather than have the party tip the scales and decide for them.”

Ironically, De La Fuente was also denied access to the Brown and Black Forum even though he petitioned for inclusion for months. The fact that the Forum was conducted without a legitimate minority on stage and that the Caucus rules were changed at the last minute underscores the reason so many people disrespect what our political system has become.
