India announces 20-city list for smart makeover project

MUMBAI, India - Jan. 30, 2016 - PRLog -- The Centre announced $7.5 billion smart makeover project for 20 cities across the country

Minister of Urban Development, Shri M.Venkaiah Naidu at the Centre announced today the first batch of 20 cities who won the Smart City Challenge Competition. Thee chosen 20 cities will get uninterrupted power supply and clean water, efficient waste disposal system, good quality roads, high-speed internet, affordable housing options, sustainable public transport and digitised public services.

The idea of smart city; was first introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and has ever since aroused an unprecedented enthusiasm among the cities, said Mr Naidu. He further added that when the time has come for an idea, nobody could stop it.

Among the 98 cities that had taken part in the Smart City Competition, Madhya Pradesh has the most number of cities with three cities listing in the top 20.Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu have two cities each. While Bhopal got the lowest points among the selected cities, Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha, garnered the highest points and emerged as the first winner among the Smart Cities. Patnaik tweeted to congratulate the citizens as well as the team of Bhubaneswar on this win and urged to make the city of excellent status with joint efforts.

Other cities that featured in the 20 smart city list were Ghaziabad in the NCR, Jaipur and Udaipur. These proposed smart cities are mainly tourist destinations. Naidu told the news conference that with this game changing mission, the business-as-usual approach ends and a new era begins. The centre government has planned to provide INR 200 crore in the first year to each selected city and thereafter INR 100 crore in each subsequent year.
