NORWOOD, Mass. - Jan. 29, 2016 - PRLog -- GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc., a leading environmental and geotechnical consulting firm, announces that Melissa Kenerson has achieved certification as a Massachusetts Toxic Use Reduction Planner (TURP.)

TURP is an environmental, safety, and/or process professional that has passed a course developed by the Toxics Use Reduction Institute (TURI) as well as a certification exam developed by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP), and meets specific education and experience requirements.  Once certified by MassDEP, TURPs can organize, prepare, write, and/or manage, but more importantly certify Toxics Use Reduction Plans for Massachusetts companies that are required to report under the Massachusetts Toxics Use Reduction Act (TURA).

Enacted in 1989 and amended most recently in 2006, TURA requires Massachusetts companies that use significant quantities of specific toxic chemicals to evaluate and plan for pollution prevention opportunities, implement them if practical, and annually measure and report the results. The Act, administered jointly by the Office of Technical Assistance and Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection in the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs and the Toxics Use Reduction Institute at UMass Lowell, has led businesses to improve their manufacturing efficiency and reduce their toxic chemical usage.

Kenerson earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering and Environmental Law and has more than 18 years of experience in engineering and environmental services. Her areas of expertise include environmental compliance, air permitting, environmental auditing, groundwater remediation and environmental permitting.
