Niles, IL—We are delighted to announce the availability of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea for the first time since its original publication by James Osgood and Co. in 1873.  Perfectly recreated from rare first edition copies of the Jules Verne masterpiece, all but lost when fire swept through the publisher’s warehouse, it is now available in its original format including the ultra-rare jellyfish cover vignette for the first time since originally offered by James Osgood and Co.

Known for the extremely high quality of its publications, James Osgood and Co. worked with some of the world’s greatest talents including Verne, Mark Twain, Leo Tolstoy and Walt Whitman to publish superb editions of their work.  Nearly every copy of this Verne first edition was destroyed in the fire, leaving it as one of the rarest American publications of the 19^th Century.  When it was reissued by Geo. M. Smith, the jellyfish vignette on the cover was replaced with Captain Nemo holding a sextant.

This edition recreates every aspect of the Osgood first edition, including the reproduction of the infamous 1872 British translation by Lewis Page Mercier – which remained the most common English translation for more than 100 years. Illustrated with 110 woodcut plates.
