WASHINGTON - Jan. 14, 2016 - PRLog -- The National Commission on Teaching & America’s Future (NCTAF) is delighted to announce that the Chancellor of District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS), Kaya Henderson, is joining the organization as a commissioner.

“We are so pleased to welcome Kaya to the Commission.  She is a proven leader who understands the importance of all children having access to great teaching,” said the Honorable Richard W. Riley, co-chair of NCTAF and former U.S. Secretary of Education.  “We look forward to working together on developing national recommendations that support and strengthen the teaching profession.”

Chancellor Henderson has been at the helm of DCPS since 2010. Under her leadership, the district’s public schools have made great progress by placing an intense focus on improving teacher quality, actively engaging parents and community members, and launching and expanding a range of innovative programs to increase academic achievements for all students. Chancellor Henderson originally joined DCPS in 2007 as the Deputy Chancellor. Prior to DCPS, she worked at TNTP and Teach for America.

“Kaya is driven by what works best for kids, how to educate the whole child, and ways to open up vast learning opportunities for every student,” said Melinda George, president of NCTAF. “Supporting great teaching is in her DNA and she has her finger on the pulse of what teachers and students need to ensure a high quality of education. We are extremely excited to add her experiences and knowledge about what works for improving education into the work of the Commission.”

The National Commission on Teaching & America’s Future (NCTAF) is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1994 as a bipartisan effort to engage education policymakers and practitioners to address the entrenched national challenge of recruiting, developing, and retaining great teachers in order to ensure that all students have access to quality teaching in schools organized for success. For 20 years, NCTAF has worked to drive and inform the national dialogue about the importance of great teaching, especially in hard-to-staff schools. NCTAF’s research and recommendations inform innovations and improvements in teaching quality nationwide, focus attention on the importance of equitable distribution and retention of teachers, and promote promising practices for the development of teachers’ skills and career pathways.
