According to the January 2015 Gallup Poll’s “State of the American Workplace” report, “a majority of employees, 51%, are "not engaged" and 17.5% were "actively disengaged" in 2014.” Gallup defines engaged employees as those who are involved in, enthusiastic about and committed to their work and workplace.

The top 5 reasons for job dissatisfaction are:  the amount of on-the-job stress, the amount of money they earn, their employers’ retirement plan, lack of promotional opportunity and less than adequate employer health insurance benefits.  To make matters than only significant change in this year’s report compared to last year’s report is a drop in satisfaction for promotional opportunity!

Wharton believes, “People will very rarely become wealthy or enjoy daily satisfaction working for someone else. With the unemployment rate hovering around 5.5% many people are turning to entrepreneurship to earn a living.  However, many more are turning to entrepreneurship due to the top 5 reasons for worker dissatisfaction as outlined in the Gallup Poll.  Another major reason that people are so dissatisfied (and this wasn’t explored in the Gallup Poll) is because they are working for managers from hell!”
