They have eliminated rows of physical servers and storage cabinets with virtualization. Savings have flowed directly to corporate bottom lines. But in the course of virtualizing physical IT assets, enterprises have overlooked additional opportunities in virtualizing other very expensive assets, such as software licensing fees, the number of hours committed to managing IT infrastructure resources with highly compensated IT professionals, and the time it takes to configure and deploy physical representations of infrastructure software. One of these software infrastructure areas is IMS, a mainstay database in the IBM z Systems environment.
