“The current moment could hardly be more opportune for another wrenching rendezvous with Willy Loman, the American dreamer…” (The New York Times). The landscape of American theater was forever changed in 1949, with the premiere of playwright Arthur Miller’sDEATH OF A SALESMAN. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, 9 Drama Desk Awards, and a total of 13 Tony Awards, including Best Play, this masterpiece exposes the secrets, shattered dreams, and unfulfilled promises that lurk behind the white picket fence as told through the last 24 hours of a man’s life. Traveling salesman Willy Loman chases a phantom American dream, and struggles with the dashed hopes of his family’s once-promising future. DEATH OF A SALESMAN is a poignant story of love, pride, disappointment, and friendship – attention must be paid.

Palo Alto Players’ production of DEATH OF A SALESMANwill be helmed by acclaimed local director and Gunn High School educator Kristen Lo.  Lo will be integrating the talents of many Gunn High School staff and alumni into the production to create a truly local theatrical experience of this gripping classic.

“It all started a few years ago in a staged reading workshop I was directing at Gunn High School.” says DEATH OF A SALESMAN director Kristen Lo. “I invited Tim Farrell (retired Gunn High School English teacher) and Paul Dunlap (Gunn High School English teacher) to play the roles of Willy and Biff, respectively, because they had been teaching the play so long in their classes and both brought a literary perspective to it, in addition to being experienced actors. The workshop was such a hit that I was approached by Palo Alto Players’ Artistic Director, Patrick Klein, to mount a fully-staged production highlighting the talents of other Gunn teachers, alumni, and community members.”

Lo goes on to say, “Using an all-local cast to tell this story is particularly important because what is happening to the Bay Area is very similar to what was happening in New York in the 30's and 40's. It's getting harder and harder for a middle class family to make ends meet in the Bay Area, and the play highlights the challenges and risks of parenting in a competitive environment, very much like our community.
