Holiday Treats to Avoid if You Wear Braces

Holiday season is upon us, which means plenty of treats, but avoid those that can damage your braces.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Dec. 24, 2015 - PRLog -- Langley, BC – The holidays are upon us, which means delicious treats abound. But if you are one of the many people in braces this holiday season, there are many treats you need to avoid to prevent damage to your braces.

No matter what holiday you celebrate, there are treats and snacks everywhere that are tempting. But if you’ve been in orthodontic care, it’s especially important that you pay close attention to which treats you can have, and which ones you should avoid.

If you want to avoid a visit to your orthodontist this holiday season, it’s best to avoid the following:

•Candy canes and other hard candies

•Nuts and popcorn

•Peanut brittle, pecan pie, toffee and other sticky or hard desserts

•Hard, raw vegetables, unless cut into small, bite-size pieces

The reason why patients need to avoid these and similar treats is that they can cause damage to the braces. The last thing you want this holiday season is to have to go to your orthodontist’s office because you’ve broken a wire or a bracket.

You work hard during your orthodontic treatment, so it’s important to not undo that hard work by a momentary lapse by attempting to treat yourself to something that could damage your braces.

It’s also important to remember to properly care for your teeth and braces this holiday season. Chances are good you’ll be snacking more often than normal, so it’s important to remember to brush and floss regularly.

The more you snack, the more prone you are to developing dental caries. It’s important to brush following any snacking. If you can’t brush right away, drink plenty of water to help wash away any food particles that might remain after snacking, and brush as soon as you can.

The brackets and wires of braces(http://www.bcorthodonticsgroup.com/life-with-braces.htm) leave nooks and crannies perfect for food particles to hide in, which can lead to bad breath, as well as the build-up of bacteria that can lead to decay.

If you experience damage to your braces this holiday season, schedule an appointment(http://www.bcorthodonticsgroup.com/contact-us.htm) with your orthodontist as soon as you can. Your braces can only move your teeth when they are in proper working order.
