WASHINGTON - Dec. 21, 2015 - PRLog -- Dr. Omekongo Dibinga came from humble beginnings, overcame tremendous obstacles, and now helps others do the same as the professor of Cross-Cultural Communication at American University and director of UPstander International.

Dr. Dibinga travels around the world, using his personal experiences to encourage conversations on social and political issues. Growing up in Massachusetts, he lived in a poverty-stricken community where he was subject to verbal and physical abuse from other children because of his name. He had little money, few clothes, and during the harshest of winters, heat was scarce for him and his family. But, in a society where a black man was more likely to end up dead or in prison by 25, he defeated the odds and decided to pursue a career in academia.

Through conferences, motivational talks and individual mentorship, Dr. Dibinga continues to take a stand against injustices and strives to empower the youth of today with the tools to be upstanding citizens of tomorrow. The Black Lives Matter Movement is a great example of why his work is so vitally important.

Today, his organizations teaches other organizations, educators and students to take a stand against injustices.

“I take my work into schools, I go into prisons, I go into community centers and really help staff learn how they can better motivate their students. It’s about what they can do to be more empowered in their community to speak on some of the injustices that they may be silent on, on a daily basis.”

Dr. Dibinga uses his passion for Hip Hop and spoken word to encourage leadership as well as consults on educational and diversity empowerment. To date, he has worked with Intel as an advocate of conflict-free minerals, spoken for TEDx, NASA and the United Nations to bring awareness to these issues across the world.
