Active Shooter Training at Times Square, Navy SEALs and FDNY Vets Teach Doctors to Survive

NEW YORK - Dec. 16, 2015 - PRLog -- “This is what it sounds like when the magazine drops as the shooter reloads…so it is a good time to run if you can…” "Hollywood teaches you to lay down if shot. We teach you to finish the fight." These are two strategies taught by Navy SEALs Mike Donnelly, Hector Delgado and Bob Tanenholz during this course.

Dr. Terrence Burns, a member of The New York State Society of Anesthesiologists, moderated a sold out workshop that dealt with disaster preparedness. The venue at Times Square was the site of an attempted terrorist bombing in May 2010, thwarted by alert citizens.

Components of the training: Leadership in an emergency, situational awareness, weapon recognition, improvised weapons, lockdown techniques, self -defense and what to expect from the first responders on scene. The program is a collaborative effort between former FDNY members and Navy SEALs, selected for real life operational experience and proven teaching skill.

Hospitals face a delicate balancing act, remain open, friendly and economically competitive in the face of an increased need for security. Accreditation organizations such as the Joint Commission evaluate the ability of hospitals to respond to many types of disasters, including shooters. The FBI and Department of Homeland Security have issued formal advisories following the attacks in Paris and San Bernardino.

"Vigilance" is the motto of American Anesthesiologists. Current world events have force them to redefine their scope of practice. A study by the CDC found that healthcare workers are at an increased risk of workplace violence.
That finding was supported by a 2012 study in the Annals of Emergency Medicine which describe hospital shooters as "highly motivated". The scenario has hit small facilities such as the Planned Parenthood Clinic in Littleton, CO and world renown centers like Johns Hopkins and Massachusetts General Hospital.

In a dangerous world, knowledge and preparation will separate survivors from victims. “Armed Assault Awareness & Survival Training” classes are offered through IFLSE and are modified to meet the needs of any industry, school or municipality. Family friendly training is also available as there is a critical need for everyone to acquire this knowledge.
