Don't throw your diet off track, Stay healthy during the holidays

TORONTO - Dec. 15, 2015 - PRLog -- Don't throw your diet off track, Stay healthy during the holidays

Toronto, ON- December 15th, 2015. Many of us see the holidays as an excuse to splurge-it’s the one time of the year you can do this without feeling guilty, right? Well, not quite. Dr. Andi (Dr. Andra Campitelli, ND) has some simple tips for all of us to stay healthy and focus during the holiday.

Dr Andi’s Top 5 tips:

1) Leading up to the holidays - be as healthy as you can!  No one will ask you NOT to indulge, but, on average, people gain 1-2lbs during the holidays- and NEVER lose it. So you just pile it up every year... So, be smart and stay on track before the holidays start.  Studies also show that if you can manage your weight during the week, you won’t pack on the holiday pounds, even if you indulge on the weekend.  It's all about balance.

2) Be active! Try and get those workouts in during the holiday, as much as you can. This will help to burn off those extra calories - since no one is asking you to skip the holiday treats. In addition to that, if you’ve put in that extra effort, you’re less likely to want to sabotage those fitness results, and may decide to skip out on that extra desert

3) Contribute to the meal! If you’re cooking the meal this year, make it healthy. You don't have to skip all the desserts, but you don’t have to have a calorie-rich meal either. Find a way to cut out some of the calories from your meal, wherever you can. For example:

a. Baking instead of frying food

b. Cutting back on the butter, oil or the sugar in recipes. There’s usually more in the recipe than is really necessary anyway. Otherwise, find a healthier substitute.

c. Swapping out creams for yogurt

d. Make sure salad and steamed veggies are a large part of the meal.

e. If you’re a guest, contribute to the meal – with something healthy that you love. This way you’re not stuck eating something you don’t want and you know there are something healthier options to mix in with your unhealthy ones.

4) Portion police. Try (if possible!), not to overeat! If you want to try everything, go for it.  Knowing you can always go back for seconds, take less than you think you can eat (our eyes are always bigger than our stomachs). Chances are, you’ll be full before you make it to that second plate, and you’ll still need to make room for that dessert… and don’t forget about

5) Make healthy beverage choices. This is the season of over-indulgence, and a TON of parties.

Try for lower-calorie drinks. Clear spirits are always a better option - something like vodka and gin. Skip out on the fruity, sugary mixes too, and stick with soda water, and lemon as your mix.

If you're going for wine, white and sparkling wines generally have fewer calories.
