Follow on Google News | South Devon Single Mum of 4 Wins International Songwriting CompetitionChoir director and composer Helen Yeomans from Totnes, Devon has just won a prestigious International song writing contest for her soulful song ‘Saved’. The competition which is run by the UK Song Writing Contest received more than 7000 entries.
By: Glorious Chorus Helen said “I entered 11 different songs across various genres from soul /gospel to folk and jazz and 9 of them were awarded semi-finalist places with ‘Saved’ taking the top prize in the gospel category. I’m totally bowled over. I entered the competition in the hope that my work would be heard by a wider audience as I thought if I could boost interest in my music I could hopefully attain more gigs for my 40 strong auditioned choir, Glorious Chorus. Helen’s a cappella choir has performed her original music at festivals such as; Glastonbury, Port Eliot and Isle of Wight to name just a few over the past few years. The choir has been performing the song ‘Saved’ as part of their set with soloist Fran Andre at the helm during 2015 and no doubt the beautiful words, melody and harmonies will be a firm favourite when it performs throughout 2016. Helen’s journey to International recognition has not been easy, she is a single mum of 4 and she says she only found her voice and decided to follow her heart and passion for music when she was 40 (after having successful careers in both fashion and as an restaurateur)! Through hard work and persistence and because of her sheer passion for music, Helen’s self-taught skills and natural talent as a composer and choir master means she is in great demand as a teacher thought-out Europe. Additionally, the CDs featuring her beautiful songs and the sheet music featuring her original scores are also greatly requested. So much so her highly acclaimed work ‘One World Show’ is to be performed at Hull in 2017 as part of the city’s UK City of Culture celebrations. To hear Helen’s incredible music join her and her choir Glorious Chorus supported by Thula Mamas for a dazzling fundraising concert in Totnes on Sunday 20th December.
