Lambda Epsilon Omega Chapter helps clean up DeKalb County

DECATUR, Ga. - Dec. 14, 2015 - PRLog -- Sorority members of the Lambda Epsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. spent the morning of Saturday, October 31st with the Environmental Ownership Committee in partnership with the South DeKalb Improvement Association and Keep DeKalb Beautiful to pick up litter and clean up the area around Wesley Chapel Road. Wesley Chapel Road is a busy area in South DeKalb and with a plethora of retail businesses, restaurants and MARTA stops. The clean-up of litter by volunteers along this stretch of road has hopefully helped discouraged others from littering.

The most common littered objects include fast food, paper, aluminum, glass and plastic. Unfortunately some would rather toss a fast food wrapper and empty soda on the street than to find a garbage can. And not surprisingly cigarette butts make up over half of our littered objects, taking about ten years to decompose because of the cellulose acetate. According to literature from “Keep America Beautiful” website the costs of litter in the United States can be more than $11.5 Billion* each year (*based on a 2009 study). And while businesses pay a majority of that cost (about 80%), local and state governments, schools and other organization pick up the remaining costs. The presences of litter can have indirect costs as well which are considerable. The presence of litter in a community can decrease property values by 7% and 55% of realtors think that litter reduces property values by about 9%.

Litter is impactful to everyone and our community. We can help keep our community free from litter with three simple steps: stop littering, pick up litter and educate others about the impact of littering.

Lambda Epsilon Omega Chapter will continue efforts to clean up DeKalb County in 2016.
