The primary goal is to bring a warm atmosphere of community and comfort to the kitchen, regardless of the number of guests being served (most recipes can easily be increased or decreased accordingly—and many are excellent as leftovers, or can be frozen for later consumption). It is a cookbook filled with recipes that Winegar imagines the characters of Middle-earth would like to eat “… which means people in general—for don't we see ourselves in the monsters, heroes, and dwarves of the fantasy world, and isn't that why the stories resonate so well with so many of us?”

Substitution suggestions for out-of-season or regionally challenged ingredients expands the boundaries of the recipes. Tips and hints are sprinkled throughout, as well as, a chart included in the back of the book to aid cooks of varying skill.
