SANDY, Utah - Dec. 3, 2015 - PRLog -- Dustin Berlin left his profession as a professional hairstylist to pursue his dream of helping the homeless get off the streets, into housing, and back to work. His mother, a hairstylist who died of ovarian cancer at age 49, instilled the importance of loving and caring for those around him by modeling selflessness in and out of the salon. Dustin follows her guiding spirit as he travels around the nation giving haircuts to the homeless, helping hairstylists organize haircutting events in their towns, and distributing street survival kits at those events.

Being homeless for a short period of time in his younger years and self-medicating away the desolation he felt, Dustin understands how lonely and helpless people on the streets can feel. Knowing that anyone who doesn’t have a backup plan or a helping hand could end up in that position, Dustin dreams of building a nonprofit that can provide housing, medical treatment, financial advice, and job placement assistance to the homeless. With love, support, and a helping hand, his “You First Project” will help them live fulfilling lives.

Michael John (MJ) Derricottis no stranger to giving back. While spending his Tuesdays styling hair for the residents of Gettlove, an organization that provides permanent supportive housing to Hollywood’s homeless, MJ conceived Makeovers That Matter. The Los Angeles–based foundation equips female veterans and economically challenged women to reenter the workforce by providing free hair, makeup, and fashion styling services, plus financial literacy and career preparedness classes with the goal of securing a job that leads to a long-term career path.

A stylist for over 20 years, MJ worked at Umberto’s of Beverly Hills and B2V salons. He has styled QVC personality Nick Chavez and he was the go-to guy for the Academy Awards for two years. He now owns MJ Hair Salon inside Salon Indo in West Hollywood and he is a regular on the Hallmark Channel’s “Home and Family” for Makeovers That Matter, a subject he cares deeply about.

Interviewed by Winn Claybaugh, Dustin and MJ share their inspiring stories and valuable insights on how to use your skills, passion, and talents to make a difference in the lives of the homeless.
