Local author, Rosa Walston Latimer, will be available to sign copies of her Harvey Houses of Kansas, New Mexico, and Texas books Harvey Houses of Kansas: Historic Hospitality from Topeka to Syracuse is a narrative non-fiction about the development in Kansas of Fred Harvey’s expansive chain of restaurants and hotels along the Santa Fe Railroad. It all began with a hand-shake agreement between Harvey and the president of the rail line in 1876, a time when the economics of expanding train travel across the Western United States was a challenge to the railroad. To meet the challenge, the Santa Fe determined that increasing passenger train travel would help cover the cost. Steam engines required refueling every 100 miles and an English immigrant, Fred Harvey, saw a business opportunity for these fuel stops. He knew that providing good food in pleasant surroundings would appeal to train passengers. Santa Fe Railroad officials liked Harvey’s idea and Harvey Houses were built along the railroad as it stretched across Kansas through Colorado, Missouri, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona towards California. As Harvey Houses were established, they did indeed enjoy a fine reputation as a safe, comfortable place to enjoy delicious, freshly prepared food.
