Outdoor Designs Unveils Organically Enhanced Lawn Care

Local Company Takes New Efforts to Be Environmentally Concious

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Nov. 26, 2015 - PRLog -- Lawn care carries many stigmas, one of them being that chemicals are endlessly being pumped into our water system. Though turf managers are strictly regulated by the Department of Agriculture, mistakes happen and they can be costly. Outdoor Designs has unveiled a lawn care program that they feel minimizes environmental impact.

Outdoor Designs says that the use of chemicals, whether managing turf for home lawns or sports fields, is a necessary practice. However, they also feel that many issues can be solved without using harsh products. Utilizing organic soil amendments, turfgrasses can be given an optimum growing medium full of beneficial bacteria and microbes that can help the turf take care of itself, thus limiting the need of pesticides.

Matt Martin of Outdoor Designs says, "Compost tea is a brewed product I started using in Augusta, GA. We were losing a battle forcing centipedegrass to grow in poor soil. We thought a better option would be correcting poor soil to grow centipedegrass. It took time, which was a tough sell, but the results propelled our business. We decided to move to Knoxville, TN where growing fescue in clay poses many challenges." With his experience in Augusta, GA, Matt Martin believes that he can apply the same principal to East Tennessee.

Compost tea is literally compost that steeps in clean, chlorine free, water. Matt Martin adds molasses to the water and oxygenates it as it steeps. The microbes, beneficial bacteria, and organic nutrients work their way into the water where it is all collected and sprayed onto turfgrass. All the organic goodness can break down grass clippings and other organic matter to release nutrients. The only thing left behind is carbon. "Carbon is the coral reef of the soil," Matt says. ”Carbon helps establish a healthy soil food web. A strong food web ensures that plants have a ready supply of nutrients available for easy absorption. The soil food web is a complex system of living organisms that feed off one another. As these organisms live and die, they leave behind compounds that are critical for plant nutrition in an organic growing environment.”
