GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - Nov. 25, 2015 - PRLog -- Building Maintenance Management, a Golden Valley commercial property maintenance company, is offering recommendations on how to have a safe and happy holiday season.

If you are cooking, do not leave food unattended on your stove or in the oven. Make sure you or another adult stays in the kitchen at all times. Use a timer so you do not forget that you have something cooking or baking. Also, make sure any children that are in your home know that a hot stove and oven are dangerous and they should stay several feet away from it at all times.

During your cooking or baking times, make sure you wear short sleeves or sleeves that are tightly fitted. This helps ensure your clothing will not accidentally brush up against a burner and ignite. Keep all pot holders , bags, towels and other items away from your stove top when it is in use.

After you are done with your cooking or baking, make sure the stove top and the inside of your oven are cleaned thoroughly. Built-up grease could ignite and cause a fire so cleaning grease out of your oven and off of your stove top could help decrease the likelihood of this happening.

When decorating for the holidays, any artificial trees that you put up should be flame retardant. Real trees should have fresh, green needles that should not easily fall off when you touch them. If the needles do fall off easily, this indicates the tree is too dry and could be a fire hazard.

Real candles should never be used to decorate your tree or anywhere else in your home. Use electric candles instead. If you do use a real candle, never let it burn unattended and do not burn it anywhere that is particularly drafty.

Do not overload your surge protectors or electrical outlets, and do not over-use extension cords. Unplug Christmas tree lights and any other decorations that use electricity when you go to bed or when you leave your home.
