Oakland University receives $20,000 gift to benefit student veterans

ROCHESTER, Mich. - Nov. 19, 2015 - PRLog -- As the Oakland University community observed Veterans Day last week, an anonymous donor gifted OU with a $20,000 donation to benefit its student veteran population. The gift will go toward expanding OU’s textbook loan program for student veterans and their dependents.

Launched earlier this year, the textbook loan program encourages OU students, faculty and staff to donate gently used books in exchange for a t-shirt that reads “Support OUr Veterans.” The program got off to an auspicious start, with more than $1,500 in books being loaned to student veterans and their dependents. The $20,000 gift will fund the purchase of additional textbooks for the loan library and also support incentives to encourage program participation.

“We started the textbook loan program as a way to engage the entire campus community in supporting our student veteran population,” said OU Veteran Liaison Jeffrey Schuett. “We’ve seen a tremendous response, and this gift will help us build on that momentum. We are grateful to the donor for helping us make sure OU’s student veterans have access to the textbooks they need.”

OU has more than 300 student veterans on campus. To learn more about programs and services available to OU veterans and their dependents, contact the Office of Veterans Support Services at (248) 370-2010.
