ROYAL OAK, Mich. - Nov. 13, 2015 - PRLog -- As Michigan continues its comeback, the Port of Detroit’s role is growing.  Case in point: On the evening of October 15 the Port of Detroit and the Nicholson Terminal & Dock Co. in Ecorse received six press machines from Hyundai Rotem – a South Korean manufacturer of plant equipment – destined for the General Motors Grand River Assembly operation in Lansing. GM is investing $174 million in a new stamping facility at the Grand River plant, requiring the installation of new presses and related materials.

The presses, some weighing as much as 210,000 pounds, along with nearly 3,000 tons of additional equipment were discharged from the ship and loaded onto trucks for final delivery to Lansing.  Nicholson Marine terminal is especially well suited to handle this type of project cargo, with more than 85 years’ experience in the industry.Nicholson Marine Terminal has been especially busy this year with several project cargo movements, including those destined for Sterling Heights and Holland, Mich.

John Loftus, Executive Director of the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority, said: “This is an important demonstration of how the Port of Detroit serves Michigan’s industrial sector.”

Detroit along with Michigan’s other ports and marine facilities, including Monroe and Muskegon, also serve the State’s power generation, construction and manufacturing sectors.  The maritime industry handles more than 70 million tons of cargo every year and employs over 25,000 workers in the State. This first movement for General Motors in Lansing will support the 1,200 jobs involved with the production of the Camaro and Cadillac CTS and ATS.
